ICOS is working together with other research infrastructures and scientific partners to facilitate better science and to develop services also for other users. This work is often done in EU-funded projects together with other organisations. Thus, we are now looking for an experienced
Service Designer
to work within these projects in the role of facilitator and planner of the co-development, and to find out stakeholder needs and requirements. In one project, we develop services addressing climate risks for industrial users, while in another project the aim is to explore the types of services infrastructure can offer to businesses. You will work closely with the colleagues in ICOS Head Office in Helsinki, with scientists and experts in the international project teams, and with other stakeholders in Europe.
In this role, your responsibilities include eg.:
- Identification and profiling of key stakeholders
- Facilitation and coordination of processes to finding out user needs, particularly for users outside of academia
- Gathering stakeholder feedback on the services being developed
- Organisation of stakeholder events, and mapping of stakeholder engagement best practices
- Facilitation and coordination of tasks and work packages within EU-projects
- Supporting the ICOS Head Office staff with your service design competencies in other projects or in ICOS core work.

You will be part of an international Head Office team with good spirit in Helsinki while being in contact with people across Europe. You will be a member of the ICOS Communications team of six persons, and report to Head of Communications. This is a new role within ICOS, and you can develop yourself and ICOS through your work.
This a full-time, fixed-term position until the end of 2025. However, there is a possibility to extend the contract, depending on the availability of external project funding. The salary range is around 4000-4400 euros, however, you can express requests related to your experience. ICOS ERIC offers you good health- and other personnel benefits. The position is located in the ICOS Head Office in Helsinki, Finland. We have a hybrid way of working. A working permit in an EU country is required.
To succeed in this role
To be successful in this role, you should have proven, solid experience in service design, from facilitating service design processes to developing digital services. Experience in working with complicated, non-tangible services, and in international, often online networks is highly preferred. Experience in other service development roles eg. in businesses, and knowledge about user experience design in digital platforms are also assets. Previous experience of collaboration with scientists, research organisations, or in developing science-based applications or services is an advantage, as well as knowledge of European Union-funded projects (e.g. H2020 or Europe).
You are comfortable with leading and facilitating development workshops, both onsite and online. Project management and event organizing skills are part of your toolbox. You can grasp and analyse complex issues and contexts, and provide insights and summaries in an easily understandable way. With the help of your good interpersonal skills and resilience, you can manage the participating organisations’ possibly conflicting interests.
You have a self-directed approach and adept prioritization skills. Excellent writing skills are needed to write reports and other documents, and fluency in written and spoken English is a must-have. ICOS’s working language is English, although other European languages are also useful. You hold a degree in a relevant field, either at university or at applied university level, or both.
The position requires some travelling within Europe, a few times a year.
