Join us for the hybrid 'Science meets City: Zurich & Europe' event, that will bring together city representatives from all over Europe in Zurich and online. We will share the latest scientific findings on greenhouse gas emission monitoring in European cities and the impact on urban policies.
Time: 12.00-17.30, Monday 8 December 2025
Location: Online and Zurich, EMPA, Ueberlandstrasse 129, 8600 Dübendorf, Switzerland
Registration: Sign up here (by Monday 24th of November to secure your spot)
Meals: Lunch and coffee breaks offered by the project
Organized by ICOS Cities, this event brings together the scientific community, representatives from European cities, and climate experts to accelerate the transition toward carbon neutrality.
The programme: Data, tools, and policy
The day is designed to offer a comprehensive overview of the methods and tools necessary for effective urban greenhouse gas monitoring and assessment of climate action:
- Urban emissions monitoring: We will explore the latest greenhouse gas (GHG) emission trends and new data sets that are redefining GHG inventories for the Zurich, Munich, and Paris regions. You will also learn how to set up an urban greenhouse gas emissions monitoring system according to your city's budget and geographical needs.
- Inventory roadmap: A dedicated session will present guidelines for European cities, promoting a flexible and efficient approach to creating and improving emissions inventories.
- Climate scenarios and decarbonisation: A scientific assessment of the transition of Paris and its region toward decarbonisation, providing a solid foundation for political decision-making.
- The citizen perspective: The key results from the European Social Survey ICOS Cities Panel will offer an insight into the opinions of Parisian and Munich residents regarding climate mitigation strategies.
- Practical workshop: Participate in an interactive workshop where city representatives can test the Aalto prototypes—concrete tools designed for climate action assessment.
All the participants will also get their own copy of the newly published FLUXES the European Greenhouse Gas Bulletin - Cities: from emission hotspots to climate action innovators.
Lunch and networking
Lunch (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) and a coffee break (2:45 PM - 3:15 PM) are scheduled to facilitate networking and discussions among participants and experts.
We look forward to welcoming you to this day of collaboration focused on "From science to concrete action."
