ICOS Germany

The ICOS Germany network comprises 40 stations, of which 22 are Ecosystem, 12 are Atmosphere, and six are Ocean stations. ICOS Germany also hosts the Central Analytical Laboratories of ICOS: the Central Radiocarbon Laboratory at Heidelberg University and the Flask and Calibration Laboratory at Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena.

ICOS German terrestrial Ecosystem stations cover the most abundant land use types of Central Europe, i.e. cropland and farmland, managed grassland, and forests on both mineral and organic soils. The sites are mainly grouped in local clusters, featuring different land-uses under similar weather and climate. In the atmosphere domain, ICOS Germany measures greenhouse gases at tall towers, coastal and mountain stations, forming a comprehensive coverage of Germany. In the ocean domain, observations are conducted in the surface water to determine the greenhouse gas exchange between the air and the sea in the North Atlantic Ocean, in the Baltic Sea, at tropical waters at Cape Verde and in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

ICOS Germany network is operated by 20 national research centres, universities and federal research institutions: Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Dresden University of Technology, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean  Research, Georg-August-University Göttingen, German Weather Service Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), Heidelberg University, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Leipzig (UFZ), Helmholtz Center Hereon, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Landesbetrieb Forst Brandenburg, Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI), The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW), Technische Universität Berlin, Thünen Institute, Umweltbundesamt (UBA). University of Freiburg and the University of Münster Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences.
