It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Emilio Cuevas, former Scientific Director of the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory in Tenerife, who left us last Thursday, February 26th.

Emilio had stepped down from his duties a few months ago, opting for early retirement to face a health battle that he fought with courage and dignity until his final hours.

A Pillar of ICOS Spain

Emilio was a foundational figure for ICOS Spain. From the very inception of the Integrated Carbon Observation System, he worked tirelessly to ensure Spain’s integration into the network—a goal finally realized in 2021. His persistence and vision were instrumental in aligning Spanish atmospheric research with the highest international standards.

While his extensive scientific bibliography speaks for itself, his most tangible legacy is the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory. Through his unwavering effort, he transformed Izaña into a global reference station for greenhouse gas analysis, backed by both WMO and ICOS certifications.

Beyond the data and the instruments, Emilio leaves behind a site of excellence that will continue to serve the planet for decades to come.

"On behalf of ICOS ERIC and the whole ICOS community, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him", Hannele Laine, Director General of ICOS says. "Emilio’s vision, dedication, and leadership were instrumental in bringing ICOS Spain together and establishing the foundation on which we continue to build. The value of his work is immeasurable, and its impact will endure."
