Level 2 Atmosphere data released

Earlier this month, ICOS Atmosphere Thematic Centre (ATC) with support from Carbon Portal released final quality-controlled Level 2 Atmosphere data. The release contains data from 41 ICOS atmosphere stations from September 2015 till 1 April 2026. 

This collection contains the final quality controlled hourly averaged data for CO2, CH4, N2O, CO, Radon and meteorological observations measured at relevant vertical levels, as well as additional data and flask analysis from a subset of stations. 

All included stations are labelled as ICOS Atmosphere Class 1 or Class 2 and follow the ICOS Atmospheric Station specification V2.0. 

The Level 2 data will be used in the upcoming analyses of the Global Carbon Project for CO2, CH4 and N2O as well as many other global and regional research studies and initiatives like COPERNICUS, WMO GGGW and national Measurement Verification Systems (MVS) in the framework of the Paris agreement reporting of greenhouse gas emissions to UNFCCC. 

Currently ICOS releases Level 2 quality-controlled datasets annually, fast track releases with slightly less quality control every 3 months, very fast track releases monthly and near real time data updates daily.
