How to Cite and Acknowledge ICOS data

how to cite and acknowledge ICOS data

The high-quality greenhouse gas data from ICOS can be accessed by anyone, free of charge, and from anywhere in the world. In return, the ICOS requires all data users to cite and acknowledge the use of its data.

ICOS has launched a campaign to educate all data users on the correct ways to cite and acknowledge ICOS data. Data citation, like the citation of other evidence and sources, is a good research practice and supports data reuse. It also shows support for ICOS stations and helps them secure sustainable funding.

For authors, proper data citation allows readers to locate the data, thereby extending the reach, impact, and longevity of their research.

How it works in practice

ICOS data must be cited in three places in your research paper: data citations and references. Any contribution from ICOS RI needs to be acknowledged in the acknowledgements section.

ICOS has a distinct referencing style that all data users are strongly encouraged to follow. Examples of this style can be found on the data citation campaign homepage.

The campaign was first launched at the ICOS Science Conference in 2024 and the messages will continue to be spread throughout the community in the following months. The goal is to motivate authors, academic supervisors, reviewers, and editors to consistently cite and acknowledge ICOS data.
