- Alex Vermeulen (ICOS Carbon Portal): The ICOS Curve - A picture is worth a thousand words
- Discussion and wrap-up
About the speaker
Alex Vermeulen is Director of the ICOS Carbon Portal. He has a background in Meteorology and Air Quality. After a career as an atmospheric scientist and PI of Cabauw station for greenhouse gases he switched gear in 2014 to setup the ICOS Carbon Portal, now the FAIR data portal and data platform for ICOS, leading a team of 15 excellent scientists and developers.
Abstract
The ICOS network collects highly accurate greenhouse gas observations that reveal both long-term global trends and regional sources and sinks across Europe. Although individual stations show complex, varying signals, statistical analysis uncovers the broader atmospheric background and seasonal patterns. Through open data, the Carbon Portal, and automated processing, ICOS displays near-real-time atmospheric data in the Curve application, with only a one-day delay. Curve shows trends, seasonal cycles, and variability for CO2, CH4, and N2O, helping explain carbon balances, fossil fuel impacts, and agricultural emissions. ICOS will soon add similarly powerful visualisations for ecosystem and ocean observations.
