ICOS Germany

On this page:

The ICOS Germany network comprises 37 stations, of which 20 are Ecosystem, 12 are Atmosphere, and five are Ocean stations. ICOS Germany also hosts the Central Analytical Laboratories of ICOS: the Central Radiocarbon Laboratory at Heidelberg University and the Flask and Calibration Laboratory at Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena.

ICOS German terrestrial Ecosystem stations cover the most abundant land use types of Central Europe, i.e. cropland and farmland, managed grassland, and forests on both mineral and organic soils. The sites are mainly grouped in local clusters, featuring different land-uses under similar weather and climate. These cluster stations are operated for example by Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and Technische Universität Dresden. In the atmosphere, ICOS Germany measures greenhouse gases at 8 tall towers, 2 coastal and two mountain stations, forming a comprehensive coverage of Germany. In the ocean domain, observations are conducted in the surface water to determine the greenhouse gas exchange between the air and the sea in the North Atlantic Ocean, in the Baltic Sea, at tropical waters at Cape Verde and in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

ICOS Germany network is operated by 16 national research centres, universities and federal research institutions. Beside those institutions already mentioned above, ICOS Germany is formed by the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD), Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW), Georg-August-University Göttingen, Thünen Institute, Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences as well as the new members from University of Freiburg, German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA), Landesforsten Brandenburg, and the Centre for Agrometeorological Research at DWD (ZAMF).
