ICOS launches redesigned website

17 Mar 2026

ICOS is pleased to announce the launch of its newly redesigned website. The new website design implements a streamlined navigation system and an image-led design that puts ICOS data and services at the forefront.

This renewed website navigation and design was born out of surveys and user testing rounds conducted with key stakeholders and members of the ICOS community.

This redesign was also undertaken to account for upcoming tools and services planned for launch in 2026, including a dedicated Community Hub for ICOS practitioners.

About the updates

The new ICOS website is the culmination of a roughly year-long process undertaken between ICOS Head Office and Carbon Portal.

Beyond navigational and design changes, many improvements have been implemented across the website.

“With the new website, we have been able to ensure that our site is accessible to everyone, including users of screen readers and those with low vision,” says Andrew Debevec, Software Engineer at ICOS Carbon Portal who implemented the new website design.

“I think it is important for the work that ICOS does to be as widely accessible as possible, so I’m proud that we were able to invest our time in accessibility.”

The search function has also been significantly upgraded. “In addition to being able to filter for different types of content, like station pages or news articles, the search also does a better job handling typos and finding the most relevant content,” Andrew explains.

“It’s also much faster than it was before.”

For now, this new design only appears on the ICOS Research Infrastructure website. Individual ICOS countries’ websites, ICOS Central Facilities and Thematic Centres remain the same.

At the time of writing, Carbon Portal pages retain the old layout for technical reasons. These pages will be updated to the new design in the coming weeks.

Ultimately, this website renewal project seeks to both best represent and serve its users going forward.

According to Andrew “it’s vital that we continue to innovate and refresh while ensuring that the information we offer is easily findable. The website should reflect ICOS as a whole – an organisation that strives to make information open, accessible, and useful to its community."

Our thanks go to Hurja Solutions Oy for their work on the visual redesign of the ICOS website, to ICOS Carbon Portal for the implementation of the design, and to the members of the ICOS community whose feedback contributed to the new website.
