Changes in ICOS Monitoring Station Assemblies in 2026

09 Mar 2026

2026 brings changes to the ICOS Monitoring Station Assemblies (MSAs) with new chairs and co-chairs for Atmosphere and Ecosystem domains.

In the Atmosphere MSA, Arnoud Frumau, Principal Investigator (PI) of the Cabaw ICOS Atmosphere station, has been elected as the new chair. Joe Pitt, PI of the ICOS Atmosphere stations at Bilsdale, Ridge Hill and Tacolneston, joins him as co-chair. We extend our sincere gratitude to outgoing chair Dagmar Kubistin for her dedicated service and leadership of the Atmosphere MSA.

In the Ecosystem MSA, Holger Lange, PI of the ICOS Ecosystem station at Hurdal, has been elected as a new co-chair, joining continuing co-chair Alexander Graf, who co-manages four ICOS stations. We warmly thank outgoing co-chair Natalia Kowalska for her valuable contributions to the Ecosystem MSA.

The Ocean MSA sees no change in leadership: Carolina Cantoni and Gregor Rehder continue as co-chairs.

ICOS ERIC expresses its thanks and gratitude to the outgoing chairs and co-chairs of the MSAs for all their work and dedication over the years, and wishes the new and continuing chairs and co-chairs the best of luck in their roles!

 What are Monitoring Station Assemblies?

The Monitoring Station Assemblies are a key part of ICOS governance, bringing together the Principal Investigators (PIs) of ICOS-labelled stations within each domain - Atmosphere, Ecosystem, and Ocean. The MSAs provide a forum for station representatives to coordinate scientific and operational matters, contribute to the development of ICOS standards and protocols, and ensure that the needs and expertise of the station network inform the broader work of the infrastructure.

The MSA Chairs and co-chairs are station PIs selected to be the formal representatives of their MSA in the ICOS RI Committee. The RI Committee is a high-level advisory board which advises the ICOS Director General and the General Assembly on scientific and organisational matters concerning the RI. The co-chairs relay important information and questions from their domain’s station PIs to the RI Committee and vice-versa.
