ICOS Spain

The ICOS Spain network consists of seven stations distributed across the three ICOS domains: Atmosphere, Ocean and Ecosystem. Together, they extend ICOS coverage to south-western Europe and the subtropical North Atlantic, covering a wide range of environments representative of the region.

The Atmosphere domain includes three sites. The Izaña station is hosted at the historic high-mountain Izaña Observatory in Tenerife, which has been a key global reference site for free-tropospheric measurements for decades. El Arenosillo station (Huelva) provides observations from one of the southernmost parts of continental Europe, facing the Atlantic. CIBA station (Valladolid) represents a continental inland environment in central Spain.

In the Ocean domain, CanOA is a mobile station on a merchant vessel that regularly operates between Gran Canaria and Barcelona, collecting data across the subtropical North Atlantic and the western Mediterranean. ESTOC is a fixed site north of Gran Canaria with decades of continuous oceanic observations in the subtropical North Atlantic.

The Ecosystem domain is represented by Majadas de Tiétar (Cáceres), which monitors a Mediterranean oak savanna (dehesa), a characteristic ecosystem of the Iberian Peninsula, and by Aguamarga (Almería), which represents a semi-arid espartal ecosystem, characteristic of several areas across the western Mediterranean and located in one of Europe’s climatic extremes.

The ICOS Spain consortium brings together the following institutions: the State Meteorological Agency of Spain (AEMET, coordination);  the Instituto de Oceanografía y Cambio Global at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC); the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), including the Arid Zones Experimental Station (EEZA), the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), and the Spectro-radiometry and Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory (SpecLab); the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU); the Spanish National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA); the Mediterranean Center for Environmental Studies (CEAM); the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN); the University of Valladolid (UVa); and the University of Granada (UGR).
